How To Lose Weight: Back To The Basics

It can be easy to get caught up in all the hype around losing weight. There are lots of diets and exercise programs to choose from. The right program can help you meet your goals, but don’t get so caught up in programs that you forget about the basics of how to lose weight. If one of your goals is to burn stomach fat and get a six pack then you need to make sure you are following the basics before you try to move on to anything fancy. I found an article the other day that talks about some of the basics. You can read the article at Health Insider. Their list is not long, but it is a good starting point. Below are the highlights from the article as well as some of my own suggestions on weight loss basics.

The Basics of How to Lose Weight

  • Increase Your Activity Level: This can be a variety of things. If you currently get very little or no exercise, think about what you can do to increase movement and physical exertion in your everyday activities. Find reasons to walk. Go to your co-workers office to talk instead of sending an email. You’ve probably heard it before, but park in the back of the parking lot so you have to walk further to get to where you are going. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. The list could go on and on. Just look for ways to get your body moving more often.
  • Eat Smaller Portions: If you eat at restaurants, you know that most of them serve portions that are much larger than what you should be eating in a single meal. Decide ahead of time that you are only going to eat half or a third of the served entree. Ask for a to-go-box at the beginning of the meal and pack up the portion that you aren’t going to eat before you even get started. You can do this at home too. After you finish cooking a meal, dish up an appropriate portion size for everyone and pack away anything that is left over.
  • Get Enough Sleep: This can be tough, at least it is for me. With busy lives and tight schedules, it can be easy to let this one slide. However, if you want to make your weight loss goals easier on yourself, make sure you get enough sleep every night. Your body responds best when you follow a routine and it knows what to expect. All sorts of things get out of whack when you don’t get enough sleep, so do yourself a favor and get enough sleep.
  • Drink Lots of Water: Drinking water has many benefits and weight loss is just one of them. One way that it helps you lose weight is by filling up your stomach so you don’t feel hungry. Try drinking a full glass of water before each meal. Some people say that it is best to drink really cold water because your body has to warm it up and that burns a few extra calories. Water is better cold anyway, so why not? If you are wondering how much water you should drink, I’ve heard many different opinions on the matter and nobody seems to agree. Personally, I think urine color is the best guide. If your urine is clear, you are probably drinking enough water. If it is dark yellow, you need more water. Since everyone is different, this seems to be the best guide I can suggest. Don’t take this to extremes though. There is such a thing as water intoxication and I don’t want you to kill yourself by drinking too much water. No, I’m not kidding. Too much water can kill you.
  • Be Consistent and Build Upon Your Successes: As I mentioned earlier, you body likes a routine. You will see your best results when you give your body what it wants. Start out slow and build as your body adjusts to any changes you make in your diet and exercise. It takes time and effort to burn fat. Stick with it and you will get the results you want. Stay positive and find what works for you.

There are lots of simple things that can help you with your weight loss goals. This list is intended to be a basic list and the items on it will give you basic results. If you want more substantial results, you are going to need to get your self on a program that is designed to meet your specific goals. Everyone has different goals and circumstances, so find a program that will work for you. Read about some of the programs that I recommend on my product review page.
