What Do You Need For An Effective In Home Workout?

Going to the gym is a great way to workout because everything you need is right at your fingertips. Sometimes that’s just not possible though and that is why you need to be equipped to workout at home. It is entirely possible to get a great workout right in the comfort of your own home if you own just a few essentials.

The Essentials of the In Home Workout

  • A Pull-up Bar – This is one item that you must have. Pull-ups are a great form of exercise and many at home exercise programs will use the pull-up bar extensively. A good pull-up bar, like the Iron Gym, will fit easily into your door frame and will also allow you to do other exercises like dips, pushups and crunches.
  • Pushup Stands – While not strictly necessary, pushup stands will decrease the amount of stress that pushups cause in your wrists. Additionally, pushup stands allow you to get a fuller range of motion. A good workout program will have you doing plenty of pushups, so if you care about your wrists then you need a good set of pushup stands. If you want to save some money, and you don’t mind a little less comfort, you can use dumbbells as pushup stands.
  • Dumbbells – You can do just about any exercise in your home if you have dumbbells. The problem is that an entire rack of dumbbells is very expensive and very heavy. A good alternative is to buy the SelectTech dumbbells. This will give you the equivalent of a rack with just one set of dumbbells.
  • A Workout Mat – You will be glad you have a workout mat if you incorporate an ab routine into your at home workout. Also, if you are doing any Yoga, you will definitely want to have a mat. A good exercise mat will be soft, non-slip and will have a carrying strap.
  • An Exercise Ball – Using an exercise ball is a great way to add some instability to your exercises and thus engage more muscles. You can use them for ab exercises as well as several other things.
  • A Jump Rope – You can get some great cardiovascular exercise from a jump rope. Just make sure you have enough space and high enough ceilings to use it. You may be thinking that jump ropes are for kids, but get one and use it and you will see that it can give you a great workout.
  • Resistance Bands – As an alternative to dumbbells, you can use resistance bands. You can do pretty much anything with a resistance band that you can do with a dumbbell, you just have to get used to it and be creative. They are also cheaper than dumbbells, so it’s just a matter of choice. Go with what makes you comfortable.
  • Workout Clothes – You need some comfortable clothes that won’t restrict your movement. Big and bulky clothes can get in your way and slow you down. There are lots of options out there, but one of my favorites is Under Armour.
  • A Program – You can always do your own thing, but if you are the sort of person that needs some direction, there are some really great in home exercise programs available. These programs are great because you never have to wonder what to do or if you are doing it right. Just pop in a DVD and you’re ready to go.

Remember, there is no reason why you can’t get a completely adequate workout in your own home. All you need is a few essentials. Just follow the links above to get yourself fully equipped for a great in home workout; or for a wider selection, visit my Amazon.com store.
