Lose Weight Doing What You Love

Do you dread your workouts? Do you spend hours on the treadmill and hate every minute of it? If you don’t enjoy your workouts, you are going to have a difficult time sticking with them. It is difficult enough to keep motivated to get a six pack or lose some stomach fat without having the added complication of hating your workouts.

The other day, I was reading an article on NationalPost.com about the importance of finding a form of exercise that you enjoy. The article consisted mostly of quotes from an interview with Brendan Brazier, who is a professional Ironman triathlete and also the author of Thrive Fitness. He points out that there are more options out there than just running on a treadmill or lifting weights. While I personally enjoy and recommend strength training using free weights and body weight, you may not enjoy it and your goals may be different than mine. Brendan recommends, and I agree, that you should try lots of new things until you find a form of exercise that you enjoy and that you will be able to stick with.

Some of the possible alternative forms of exercise mentioned in the article are belly dancing, karate, soccer, squash, indoor rock climbing or kayaking, laughter yoga and snowshoeing. Think about what types of activities you might enjoy and give them a try. Find a friend to go with you and that will make it even more enjoyable.

The article doesn’t mention this, but when taking this approach, you also need to consider your goals. If you are trying to build awesome six pack abs or massive pectorals, soccer probably isn’t going to be the key. However, if you are more focused on general fitness and getting a good cardiovascular workout, soccer may be just the thing you need to keep yourself engaged. It is important to do something that you enjoy, but if you have specific goals then sometimes you may have to just buckle down and force yourself to stick with the exercises that will produce those results (at least until you have reached your goal). You will know what it right for you when you find it. Let your circumstances be your guide.

Have you found an enjoyable form of exercise that you think others might enjoy trying? Leave a comment and let us know about it.
