Make Weight Loss Fun With A Little Healthy Competition

I keep coming back to the topic of motivation because I think it is one of the most important ingredients in a successful weight loss program. If you really want to learn how to get a six pack, you are going to have to learn how to keep yourself motivated. There are many diets and exercises that you can do to lose weight and get in shape, but none of them will work if you don’t. That is why motivation is so critical.

I think one of the best ways to keep yourself motivated is to draw on the support of other people. Add in a little healthy competition and you have a recipe for success. There are few things in this life that motivate better than competition, especially if you feel like you have a good chance of winning. Competing as a team can help you feel that winning is within your grasp.

I came across a great idea in The Journal Times that incorporates team competition, support, and accountability with the goal of improving the health of the participants. It is an eight week health and fitness challenge sponsored by the Western Racine County Health Department in Wisconsin. Businesses and organizations are invited to form themselves into groups of four and then compete to earn the most points during the eight week period. Points are earned by group members participating in healthy activities such as exercise, drinking water, eating vegetables, etc. Prizes are awarded to the team that accumulates the most points and everyone who participates gets entered into a drawing to win a Wii Fit. Even the prizes are healthy.

If you struggle with motivation, see if you can find a similar program in your area. If one does not exist, see what you can do to get one started. If you’re not comfortable with that, think instead about how you can use the same principles of support, accountability, and competition in a more individualized way. Find a friend or family member to whom you can be accountable and who will be supportive or your goals. If that person is willing to follow the same diet and exercise program as you and make it competitive, that’s even better.
