I first heard of the Shake Weight a few months ago. I guess that made me a little late to the party, but that’s because I don’t watch much TV so I hadn’t seen the infomercials. I wrote about the Shake Weight when I first heard about it and I promised that I would try it out and write a review. I know it has taken me a while, but I’m finally delivering on my promise.

What Is The Shake Weight?

If you’ve never heard of the Shake Weight, the best way to explain it is to have you watch the videos available on the official website.  You almost have to see it to fully understand what it is. There are two versions, one for men and one for women. There is a different website for each one and you can see the videos at Shake Weight For Men and Shake Weight For Women.

If you don’t want to watch the videos, I’ll try to explain it to you. Basically, it’s a dumbbell. It is shaped and looks like a dumbbell, but you don’t use it like a dumbbell. Instead of doing things like curls and shoulder presses with it, you just hold it in a static position and then shake it back and forth really fast. The weights on either end of the dumbbell oscillate as you shake it.

What Do You Get With The Shake Weight?

Why I Like The Shake Weight

The Shake Weight is a very interesting piece of workout equipment. I’ve never seen or used anything else like it. That is one of the reasons that I like it so much. I know that working out can be monotonous and boring if you do the same things all the time. With this dumbbell, you get to shake things up a little (Yes, pun intended. I couldn’t help myself.) which can keep things interesting.

I also like the fact that you can get a really good workout in a very short amount of time. I know you’re busy, and finding time to workout can be difficult. Well, there’s no excuse not to use this thing. The exercise DVD that comes with it only takes 6 minutes to complete. You may think that 6 minutes isn’t enough time to get a decent workout. Believe me, you’re going to feel the burn long before the 6 minutes is up. Don’t worry about that.

Another great thing about this dumbbell is that a lot muscle is engaged while using it. With a traditional dumbbell, you usually do curls, presses, etc. With those exercises you are moving in a single direction and engaging limited muscle fibers. With the shaking moved used with the Shake Weight, you are engaging more muscle and exercising areas that don’t usually get engaged.

Why I Don’t Like The Shake Weight

As you know, there are negatives to everything and as expected there are a few things I should point out here. When I first picked up the dumbbell, I was immediately surprised by the construction. I’m not sure what I was expecting, but my first impression was that it was cheaply made. I think the reason I felt that way is because it is made up mostly of plastic and rubber. I am used to dumbbells that are made entirely of metal so I was surprised by the plastic. After thinking about it though, I realized that it had to be made of plastic in order for it to work correctly and to keep the weight down to five pounds. After further examination, it appears to be well constructed and durable. At the same time, I wouldn’t go throwing it around as plastics have a tendency to crack.

Another thing to keep in mind is that it will take a little getting used to. Since the exercises you will be doing will be new to you, it will take a couple times to get the movements down right. The first time I used it, I had a little trouble with the movements. They felt awkward at first, but I had it down by my second time through the exercise DVD.

Now, let’s get to the big concern that everyone has. If this isn’t the first time that you’ve heard of the Shake Weight then you have probably seen all the spoof videos of people making fun of it. Let’s face it, the thing is goofy. I admit it, but for me the only thing that really matters is whether or not it works. I think it works really well and that’s good enough for me. It’s a piece of home workout equipment anyway, so you will be using it in the privacy of your own home. If your pride is more important to you than getting a good workout, then the Shake Weight is not for you.

Why You Should Own A Shake Weight

There are several reasons why you should own a Shake Weight, but I’ll just mention a few. First of all, it’s really light so it’s easy to take with you when you travel or if you need to exercise away from your home. The one for men only weighs five pounds and the one for women only weighs two and a half pounds.

Another reason that you should own one of these dumbbells is that you can get a great workout in a really short period of time. You can’t beat a six minute workout and that is all it takes with this dumbbell. I was really surprised at how much of a burn I got from following the exercise DVD. It’s also easy to ramp up your exercises as you start to get stronger. Just do the exercise longer or shake the weight harder and faster.

I saw this book on Amazon.com a few months ago and immediately thought it looked interesting, so I decided to read it. It was a quick and easy read and I liked it a lot so I decided I would review it for you. I recommend this book for anyone who wants to understand what causes us to get fat and how to overcome it.

Meet The Author: Jackie Warner

I can’t really put one specific label on Jackie Warner as she is/does a lot of things. As it relates to this book, the most important thing to know is that she is a fitness expert. She is also a gym owner, has her own television show, and is an all around entrepreneur. Beyond writing books, she has also made a few exercise videos.

What’s In The Book?

The book is divided into four parts:

Part 1 – This Is Why You’re Fat

In this section, Jackie talks about all the things that contribute to making you fat. She talks a lot about sugar and the way it effects various chemical processes in the body. She also talks about different organs in the body and how they play a part in making you fat or skinny.

Part 2 – This Is How You Eat To Get Hot And Healthy

In this section, you will learn all about Jackie’s approach to eating healthy. Her approach is different than most other diets. In fact, I’m not even sure you would call it a diet. She calls it a food plan.

One interesting part of this section is Jackie Warner’s 2-Week Jump Start. During the first two weeks of her program, all you worry about is making sure you are eating certain foods. You don’t have to stop eating anything you are currently eating or control yourself in any other way. All you have to do it is add in the foods on her list if you aren’t already eating them. It’s kind of like the opposite of a “diet.”

Part 3 – This Is How You Exercise To Get Hot And Healthy

Here is where you will learn all about the Jackie Warner exercise program. Just like the previous section, this section starts with a two week jump start. All you do during these two weeks is a 20 minute cardio routine five days a week. She even gives you six different routines to choose from so there is something for everyone.

After the two week intro, she will take you through her Power Circuits. This is Jackie Warner’s personal approach to circuit training. The best way to burn fat is to build muscle and this is the approach that Jackie takes. She focuses on strength training, but all of the exercises use only body weight or a small dumbbell.

Part 4 – This Is How You Stay Hot And Healthy

In this last section, Jackie focuses on getting your mind right. You may not believe it, but so much of physical fitness is in the mind. If you can’t get your mind right, you will never get the results you want. Jackie will take you through getting in the right mindset to stay thin for the rest of you life.

After Part 4, there are several appendices with some very useful resources. She includes several meal plans and recipes, a sample food journal, and a sample training log.

Why I Like This Book

There are several reasons why I think this is a great book. First of all, it is in line with my exercise and weight loss philosophy, so I know that the things she is saying are correct. Secondly, I like her writing style. As I said earlier, it is an easy read. I also like the layout of the book. The way Jackie takes you through it is very logical. The four parts of the book do a great job of taking you from beginning to end. She tells you why you’re fat, how to get skinny, and then how to stay skinny. It feels very complete.

Some other great things about this book are the meal plans and exercise routines. Jackie gives you great examples of what to eat and even gives you recipes you can follow. For the exercises, each one is illustrated by Jackie making it really easy to follow.

Last of all, the best thing about this book is Jackie’s program. Of all the weight loss programs out there, this one is really easy to follow. The meal plan isn’t too difficult and the exercises are rather simple. All you have to do is read it and do what it says.

Why I Don’t Like This Book

I don’t have many negative things to say about his book, however I will point out a couple things. First of all, this book was written by a woman for women. Throughout the book, Jackie makes it obvious that this book is for women by discussing things that are specific to the female body. This isn’t necessarily a negative (especially if you are a woman) but it does mean that certain parts of the book just won’t pertain to men. That being said, there is nothing about Jackie’s plan that doesn’t apply equally to men and women. I still recommend this book for men. They just need to gloss over the parts where she talks about breasts or getting a tone butt and legs so you will be attractive to men.

The only other complaint I have is with the Power Circuit routines. The routines are good, but there were a couple of things that weren’t immediately obvious to me when I read them. I had to take a minute to make sure I really understood how to complete the circuits. It wasn’t a big deal, but I thought the explanation could have been a little clearer.

Why You Should Own This Book

If you have struggled to lose weight, this book is for you. Jackie takes a different approach to weight loss because she knows how difficult it can be to stick with a diet and exercise routine. Her emphasis is on making her plan easy to follow and easy to stick with.

If you eat like most people eat, then this book is for you. So many of the things we are used to eating are responsible for making us fat. Even some of the foods that you think are healthy are actually contributing to making you fat. This book will educate you on exactly how you should be eating to get and stay thin forever.

If you have been doing countless hours of cardio with little to no results, this book is for you. Traditional cardio is not the answer to weight loss. You need to change the way you exercise to maximize your fat burning potential and this book will teach you how to do it.

To Sum It Up

This Is Why You’re Fat by Jackie Warner is a great book for anyone who wants to lose weight and keep it off forever. Everything you need is contained within this book. If you are ready to make a positive change in your life then you should definitely check out this book.
